The implications of the controversy are significant: treatment of children with ADHD runs between $36 billion and $52 billion per year in the United States. Children diagnosed with ADHD are more likely to miss school, have trouble learning, suffer from injury, and have troubled relationships with family and peers.

Strong demographic disparities

The researchers examined electronic health records of approximately 850,000 children between the ages of five and 11 who had been treated between 2001 and 2010 at Kaiser Permanente Southern California. Nearly five percent of all children in the study (39,200) had received a diagnosis of ADHD. The diagnosis was most common among non-Hispanic white children, who had a 5.6 percent diagnosis rate. Black children had the second-highest rate (4.1 percent), followed by Hispanics (2.5 percent) and Asian/Pacific Islanders (1.2 percent).

The researchers found that between 2001 and 2010, the rate at which children were diagnosed with ADHD increased by 24 percent, from 2.5 percent to 3.1 percent. The greatest increase in ADHD diagnoses came among black children between the ages of five and 11, where the rate increased from 2.6 percent to 4.1 percent – a 70 percent relative increase. Among girls, the increase was actually 90 percent. The relative increase among Hispanics was nearly as high, a 60 percent increase from 1.7 percent to 2.5 percent.

The rates of increase among other racial and ethnic groups were substantially lower. Among white children, the diagnosis rate increased 30 percent, from 4.7 percent to 5.6 percent, while among Asian and Pacific Islanders and other groups it neither increased nor decreased.

In general, boys were three times more likely to receive an ADHD diagnosis than girls were, while children from families making more than $30,000 per year were 20 percent more likely to be diagnosed than children from families making less than that.

“Our study findings suggest that there may be a large number of factors that affect ADHD diagnosis rates, including cultural factors that may influence the treatment-seeking behavior of some groups,” said study lead author Darios Getahun.

The drugging and mutilating state of birth in America

(NaturalNews) In America today, it is acceptable to treat birth like a disease. With little regard for human life and natural body processes, the American medical establishment drugs and mutilates expectant mothers.

Ironically, the natural way, through the care of a midwife, is becoming the illegal way in many states. Backwards laws that prohibit midwife practice, assist the American medical establishment in gaining control over birth as they use caesarean section and drugs as their money-driving force.

In a 21 year period, the U.S. cesarean rate rose from 4.5 percent in 1965 to 24.1 percent in 1986.

In 2001, cesarean section was the most common ob-gyn surgical procedure. Approximately four million births occur annually in America. 24 percent (960,000) are delivered by cesarean section. In perspective, the Netherlands perform cesarean section on eight percent of births, suggesting 640,000 cesarean sections in America are absolutely unnecessary. This high risk mutilating approach to birth has a postoperative morbidity rate of 35.7 percent. The establishment’s procedure for birth has a morbidity rate 20 times greater than a natural vaginal birth. So why is the natural way going by the wayside in America-

Maybe Americans act on fear and trust the safety net of a surgical option- Maybe drugs and cesareans are a convenient option for mothers and doctors to schedule birth and drug down symptoms- Maybe the drug approach to birth altogether is rousing side effects inside women, forcing the inevitable cesarean section as a last false hope- Maybe there’s some other power assisting the increase in drugs, surgery, and death-It seems like the government is assisting the American medical establishment. Many other states restrict midwifery, making natural birth a tough route to pursue. With midwifes being illegal, they become criminals, and the natural birth process becomes a black market. This leaves many people to believe the right and safe way is the establishment’s way, even though it remains the dark and dangerous way.

Now is the time for Americans to rethink who they trust. American philosophy on health will change. Nutrition and home birth is the future. The drugging and mutilating cannot go on forever. The establishment, protected by government ‘safety’ standards and licenses, is a scam.

According to Frank A. Oski, MD, “$13 to $20 billion can be saved every year in health care costs by developing midwifery care, making childbirth less of a medical procedure. The cost of all the unnecessary cesareans alone done in 1991 added up to more than $1.3 billion.” He says, “A shared maternity care system would lower the cost for childbirth by roughly 40 percent, or $13.143 billion.”

Child birth is not a disease. It’s a natural process that should not be treated with drugs and surgery. Americans shouldn’t fear the natural process. They should embrace it.

Heart disease: Causes and cures

(NaturalNews) With this coming February being American Heart Month and with the holiday gluttony behind us, maybe this is a good time to look at the causes and cure for heart disease.

Heart disease is the number one killer in civilized nations with evidence clearly showing that the incidence of heart disease is directly related to our abnormal dietary habits through the SAD (Standard American Diet).

Wherever people live on a diet high in refined carbohydrates and animal fats, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, arthrosclerosis, angina, and other degenerative heart changes occur most frequently.

A great deal of confusion exists about the role of animal fats as one of the causes of heart disease.

Until the early 70s it was a commonly accepted assumption that excess consumption of the saturated fats found in flesh, eggs, and dairy products were the main cause of these illnesses.

But that view could never explain why traditional Eskimos or other tribal people who eat large amounts of animal fats do not exhibit an increased incidence of heart disease. Yet, most doctors stuck to their beliefs and repeated the flesh-heart mantra regularly.

It may not be totally correct, but at least it’s simple and easy to chant without having to go into too much time-consuming detail.

The problem with much of the past research has been the traditional tendency to try, whenever possible, to find a single, simple “something” that will explain a particular disease.

What they failed to understand was that heart disease, like most degenerative diseases, for that matter, is a result of a total lifestyle, and not a simple dietary excess or deficiency.

When you look at the true causes of degenerative heart disease, you have to keep in mind that people, as individuals, respond to causes differently. But the one factor that stands out as the major cause of heart disease is diet.

The saturated fats, which are commonly found in flesh foods, are a problem. This has been long suspected and
unfortunately the situation is getting worse, not better.

Flesh products contain a very high percentage of complicated fats that cause a rise in blood cholesterol, which has been associated with the formation of atherosclerotic plaques on the arterial walls.

So, when we equate heart disease with diet, the SAD is higher in animal fats and animal proteins and cholesterol than in many populations with less heart disease. It’s a given that cannot be denied.

Things have changed. Domesticated animals have a much higher percentage of saturated fat than wild animals, due to a different diet (GMO grains, feathers and blood, and the remains of the dead, dying, diseased, and decayed animals unfit for human consumption), and Monsanto’s growth hormones used by various cattle and poultry industries to fatten their stock artificially.

Cow’s milk, ignoring the fact that it was not designed by nature for humans and the fact that it needs to be brought to a boil three times before ingestion, is now pasteurized, which kills everything in it, and homogenized, which makes the fat particles more easily digested, and is full of hormones, antibiotics and pus (from the udder infections), making it a joy to ingest and yet we feed this to infants, resulting in cases of atherosclerosis by the age of 5. And we wonder why heart disease, once a disease of middle age, is now hitting people in their twenties.

The cholesterol story is not a simple one. Although multiple studies prove that an elevated blood cholesterol level is definitely associated with an increased risk of heart disease, it cannot be said that from this date that dietary cholesterol is the single most important factor causing the increased blood cholesterol.

In fact, a modest increase in dietary cholesterol has been shown to give no significant rise in blood cholesterol levels.

While it is true that excessive cholesterol in the diet will affect blood cholesterol levels, of way more importance to the total blood fat picture is the body’s ability to form cholesterol within the body from other nonfat energy sources, such as protein.

In support of the observation that vegetarians, and especially vegans, in general have lower cholesterol levels than those that eat flesh, it has been found that certain amino acids like histidine, arginine, and lysine, found in highest concentrations in flesh products, are capable of being converted to cholesterol within the body.

Cholesterol is also a component on the platelet cell membrane and as the blood cholesterol rises, so does platelet cholesterol. With this comes the tendency for the platelet to stick to the cell wall. Once the platelet sticks to the artery wall, it releases chemicals that cause a narrowing of the blood vessels, restricting blood flow to the heart.

There has been numerous research that has helped clarify many of the previously unanswered questions about the diet/heart disease link. A significant finding was that when cholesterol was allowed to go rancid, heart disease always manifested, indicating that rancid oil factors were indeed the primary factor.

Most blood cholesterol is made within the body and this in turn depends upon the amount and kind of protein eaten, the amount and kind of fat eaten, the levels of certain vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, as well as stress, alcohol consumption, exercise level, and the interrelationship of all the previously mentioned causative factors. So, again, heart disease is not caused by a single factor.

Saturated fats, although central to the increase of heart disease, do not work in isolation in the diet. Refined carbohydrates and specifically sugar are also known to increase fat levels in the blood. This combination of sugar or refined carbohydrates taken with saturated fats seems to cause the highest of all increases of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. And this combination of foods is extremely common in the modern diet from early childhood on.

Take, for example, the typical milkshake (sugar and milk) or a hamburger and a Coke or Pepsi (flesh, refined white flour bun, and sugar). While saturated fat consumption has increased only about 10 to 15 percent in the last 135 years, the increase in refined carbohydrates and sugar has gone up to a whopping 700 percent.

This increase in the consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially sugar, is the single most important factor effecting a rise in blood triglycerides. The bottom line: high sucrose consumption links to coronary heart disease. And now with Monsanto creating GMO sugar, it hits the fan big time. As a side note, and to play it safe, your sweeteners should only include stevia, honey, or maple syrup. Otherwise, you’ll never know until a GMO labeling bill can be passed..

Then there is research that indicates that unsaturated vegetable oils may also be related to some degenerative diseases. It’s not rocket science when you consider the type of oils normally consumed in the USA – refined, heat-treated, and partially hydrogenated.

Heat-treated oils undergo a transformation from the chemically normal form to the more stable but abnormal trans or rancid form.

This trans form, not normally found in these oils, if cold-pressed or unheated, is more reactive with oxidants, producing rancidity by-products that, as we have seen, cause an elevation in the circulation of possible mutant substances, which may initiate damage to the arterial walls. equating to the production of atherosclerotic plaques buildup, with plaque being the factor associated with coronary heart disease.

Partially hydrogenated, unsaturated oils like margarine are also a factor.

When people converted from butter to margarine, thinking to reduce their total dietary cholesterol intake, it had an opposite effect.

Hydrogenated oils are high in trans forms of fatty acids, which inhibits a liver enzyme responsible for converting cholesterol into bile acids. It’s the bile acids that transport cholesterol out of the body. Guess what- If cholesterol is not converted to bile, it accumulates in the blood, which is the exact opposite of the desired result.

Fats, being water-insoluble, must be carried in the blood by a lipoprotein, which come in various shapes and sizes.
The low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are large, cholesterol-laden molecules. At high levels in the blood they are a significant factor associated with and increased risk of coronary heart disease.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are smaller molecules with more protein and less cholesterol and triglycerides. When these are found in high levels in the blood there is a reduced risk of heart disease. Plus, the HDLs help transport cholesterol from the blood to the liver where it can be converted to bile and then removed from the body.

With the discovery that these lipoproteins can be predictors of the risk of heart disease came a new area of research showing how individual foods, vitamins, and minerals affect the interrelationship of these factors, as well as cholesterol and triglycerides, giving us a better insight as to their relative effectiveness.

Vitamin C helps increase HDL levels and lowers LDL levels, protecting against coronary heart disease. It also dramatically reduces high elevations of blood cholesterol by activating the conversion of cholesterol into bile salts.

Vitamin B complex, lost in the refining process of starches and essential in the metabolism of carbohydrates, is known to keep cholesterol from collecting in plaque.

Vitamin E, also stripped away with the germ of grains and lost in the refining of oils, is essential for a healthy heart. It helps dissolve blood clots, dilates blood vessels, and conserves oxygen so that the heart can work less. And, as an antioxidant, it prevents fatty acids from becoming toxic in the body.

Lecithin, containing choline of the vitamin B complex group, is essential for the proper use of fat and cholesterol in the body and its use significantly lowers blood cholesterol levels. There is a caution however. Lecithin comes from soy and 90 – 95 percent of all soy is GMO. So, be sure to get non-GMO or organic lecithin. It’s no wonder that Hershey’s voted against Proposition 37 in California. Lecithin is in chocolate.

Essential fatty acids rich in omega 3s decrease platelet adhesion, increase bleeding time, and reduce risk of heart disease because they reduce blood cholesterol and increase HDLs.

Bran fiber reduces blood cholesterol and triglycerides, increases HDL, and lowers LDL. It also helps prevent recycling of bile from the bowel back to the liver, which signals a reduction of cholesterol conversion to bile, causing a blood cholesterol increase.

Lactobacillus lowers cholesterol levels by normalizing bowel ecology, preventing cholesterol production from within the system.

Cultured milk products like yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk, if used daily, can lower blood cholesterol 5 to 6 percent. Whether the weight gain suits you is entirely up to you.

Garlic and onion lower blood cholesterol and reduce platelet adhesiveness, as well as reducing triglycerides and increasing HDLs. The extracts are more powerful.

Soy protein lowers blood cholesterol. Again, be conscious of the GMO factor.

A second major cause of heart disease is lack of demanding exercise.

As general physical activity levels have decreased, heart disease has increased. Demanding physical exercise, the kind that gets the blood flowing and the heart pumping, helps clear the arteries of any early deposits and prevents atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. To be effective, the heart rate must rise to the point of breathlessness for at least 5 minutes a day.

Stress, coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, and obesity are more contributing factors. All these increase cholesterol, glucose, and triglyceride levels, and cause a narrowing of the arteries.

So, along with eating a plant-based diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and plant proteins like legumes, tofu, nuts, and seeds, instead of flesh proteins, your fats should be healthy fats. Specific foods that protect against heart disease, are:

Kale – full of flavonoides, omega 3s, and vitamin K, which are all anti-inflammatory.
Omega 3s – flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, walnuts, sea vegetable like dulse, arame, nori, wakame, and kombu.
Pomegranates – high in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory effects, and reduce buildup of plaque.
Nuts – lower cholesterol and good sources of fiber.
Garlic – slows hardening of the arteries and helps lower blood pressure.
Lentils – helps lower homocysteine levels, increases blood flow and oxygen
Berries – rich in fiber, antioxidents, full of beta-carotene, carotenoids, vitamin C, folate, magnesium, potassium.
Whole grains – brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, barley, etc. Loaded with fiber.

    Your sperm are what you eat: Poor diet associated with poor sperm count

Some show that well fed sperm cells are most likely to achieve successful fertilization, while others confirm what most of us already suspected: that bad diet and lifestyle choices are an important cause of male infertility.Saturated fats, are not just harder to digest, they may even be responsible for dwindling sperm counts in men. A recent study on young Danish men found that those who had a diet high in foods containing a lot of saturated fats (cheese, cream, fatty meats, chocolate and processed foods) also had 38 percent lower sperm concentrations and 41 percent lower sperm counts than men who did not consume an excess of saturated fats.

    According to informed sources in Washington, DC, representatives of Wal-Mart, General Mills, Pepsi-Frito Lay, Mars, Coca-Cola and others are meeting with the FDA this week.     Add to that the growing controversy surrounding the pending commercialization of genetically engineered (GE) salmon; the prospect of upcoming high-profile GMO labeling legislative battles in Vermont and Connecticut; and I-522, a major ballot initiative working its way toward a November 2012 vote in Washington State, and it makes sense that the Big Food elite may be preparing for a tactical retreat from the largest food fight in U.S. history.

    Is it possible that the threat posed by the growing grassroots GMO labeling movement has prompted a number of Fortune 500 corporations to abandon Monsanto and the biotech industry, and rethink the PR and bottom-line costs of clinging to their anti-right-to-know positions- After all, it’s not as if these companies are incapable of making GMO-free products.     We should be wary of any compromise deal at the federal level, one that would preempt the passage of meaningful state GMO labeling laws that have real teeth. We don’t want to end up with a law like the one Japan passed in 2001. That law exempted all GMO foods except corn and soy from being labeled, allowed up to 5% GMO content in individual ingredients, and exempted cooking oils and other foods where transgenic DNA is difficult to detect. Similarly, a GMO law passed by Brazil under pressure from consumers and farmers contained no real requirements for enforcement, until a recent court decision against Nestle.

    And let’s not forget what happened in late-2010 in another closed-door meeting, when members of the “Organic Elite,” including Whole Foods, tried to engineer a compromise with Monsanto and the USDA over “co-existence” between GMO alfalfa and organic crops.http://www.organicconsumers.can bring about major changes in corporate behavior and even in public policy. When major food corporations, under pressure from consumers, break ranks with Monsanto and the biotech industry, GMO public policy and marketplace dynamics change dramatically.

    The consumer-led rejection since 1994 of Monsanto’s recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) by family-scale dairy farmers and major dairy brands has kept rBGH marginalized. Currently less than 10% of U.S. dairy cows are injected with Monsanto’s (now Elanco’s) rBGH, a hormone linked to increased risk of cancer in humans, as well as major animal health damage. Thanks to consumer pressure, many leading dairy brands in the U.S. are labeled as “rBGH (or rBST) free;” while rBGH is banned outright in Canada, Europe, Japan, and most industrialized nations.

    If it’s true that Wal-Mart and a number of big food corporations are ready to compromise and allow labels on genetically engineered foods, don’t hold your breath for the Obama Administration’s FDA to quickly change course. For 20 years FDA bureaucrats, led by Michael “Monsanto” Taylor, the Obama-appointed FDA Food Safety Czar, have blocked all attempts to require mandatory federal GMO labeling. Our best chance to regain our right to know what’s in our food and begin to drive GMOs off the market is to stay on the offensive. We need to pass mandatory GMO labeling laws in the current frontline states of Washington, Vermont and Connecticut, and we need to step up the pressure on Food Inc. with our boycott of their “Traitor” brands.

    And even after we win mandatory GMO labeling on produce and processed foods, which will realistically take at least several years, we will still need to fight for labels on GMO-fed, factory-farmed meat, dairy, and eggs, a more comprehensive labeling law that even the EU does not yet have in place. At least 80% of GMO crops grown in the U.S. are destined for animal feed in factory farms. If we’re going to stop these environmentally disastrous farming practices, we’ll have to demand labeling of factory-farmed food. And that will require an unprecedented campaign of public education, direct action, and grassroots mobilization, similar to the campaign we are already waging for GMO labeling.

    Hats off to the thousands of activists and millions of consumers and voters who have made GMOs and GMO labeling burning issues in the U.S. Wal-Mart and the Big Food lobby would not be sitting down behind closed doors this week asking the FDA to take action if it were not for the growing online/marketplace/political activism of our nationwide organic anti-GMO Movement. But, as more and more of us understand, this monumental food fight is not just about labeling GMOs. We are fighting, as well, for a healthy and sustainable food and farming system, a green and equitable economy, a stable climate, and a real democracy where citizens, not corporations and their indentured politicians, rule.

    Sanjay Gupta and Tom Ridge warn about psychiatric drugs in mass murders

    (NaturalNews) For the first time ever, and for a brief moment in time, two knowledgeable and highly credentialed public figures have commented on the fact that psychiatric medications cause violence and must be considered suspect in the case of the Newtown shooter. But then, as if it never happened, and as if psychiatric drugs could not possibly be implicated in violence, the issue was dropped by the media.

    Fortunately I happened to be watching television on both CNN and Fox Cable News shortly after the Newton tragedy and I have put the TV clips onto YouTube.

    The most striking commentary came from Sanjay Gupta, neurosurgeon and famous chief medical correspondent on CNN. On December 18, 2012 at approximately 5:25 p.m. on CNN, he offered the following remarks:

    We still don’t know much about the shooter who lived in this home. But there is something else to consider: What medications if any he was on- I’m specifically talking about antidepressants. If you look at the studies of other shootings like this that have happened, medications like this were a common factor. Now I want to be clear I’m not saying that antidepressants can’t be effective. But people seem to agree that there is a vulnerable time. When someone starts these medications and when someone stops could lead to increased impulsivity and decreased judgment, and making someone out of touch. None of this is an excuse and it’s never just one thing. None of these behaviors will fully predict or explain why. But soon again there will be hindsight that might just help prevent another tragedy. It’s worth pointing out over a seven-year period there were 11,000 episodes of violence related to drug side effects. If there was a death involved, often it was the individual of himself or herself, a suicide.

    Gupta doesn’t say where he got the figure of 11,000 drug-induced cases of violence. However, that exact unconfirmed estimate has circulated on the Internet in regard to violence reports to the FDA.

    There is very convincing evidence of violence induced by psychiatric drugs in a scientific review of all reports of violence and homicidal ideation made to the FDA over a 69 month period. Less extreme behaviors, such as “Aggression, Belligerence and Hostility,” were excluded. Among 454 prescription drugs, 31 drugs had a disproportional rate of reported violence or homicidal threats for a total of 1527 reports. Two-thirds of drugs had no reports of violence. The drugs that most clearly cause violence included varenicline (Chantix, a smoking cessation aid), 11 antidepressant drugs, 3 drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and 5 hypnotic/sedatives (sleep aids and tranquilizers). Thus, all but one of the top offenders were psychiatric drugs. Antidepressants as a group were 8.4 times more likely than other prescription drugs to be associated with violence. This study should end the controversy. Psychiatric drugs do cause violence. As the researchers concluded:

    Acts of violence toward others are a genuine and serious adverse drug event associated with a relatively small number of drugs.

    On Sunday December 16, 2012 on the Fox News Channel, former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge was interviewed by Shannon Bream. Ridge was also on the Virginia Tech Review Panel. His roles as Homeland Security boss and Virginia Tech Review Panel member put him into a knowledgeable position. In discussing flawed efforts to intervene in the lives of potentially violent youth, Ridge observed:

    Or we put them on severe medications. One of the students in the Columbine shooting was on severe medication and apparently there’s analysis that it probably even contributed to his destructive aggressive behavior.

    Combined with Sanjay Gupta’s remarks, these observations by former Secretary of Homeland Defense Tom Ridge should elevate psychiatric drug-induced violence to a new level in public discourse.

    Ridge’s characterization of the medication prescribed to Eric Harris as “severe” was incorrect. Harris was prescribed routine antidepressant treatment. As a medical expert in cases surrounding Eric Harris and the Columbine shootings, I obtained the drug company’s official report to the FDA on March 17, 1999 confirming that one of the two shooters (Harris) had a “therapeutic blood level” of the antidepressant Luvox (fluvoxamine) in his system. Luvox is similar to other well-known antidepressants, including Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline) in its effects.

    As a medical expert, I also had access to medical records and can confirm from these unpublished documents that Eric Harris was taking Luvox regularly for one year leading up to the shootings. The dose was increased 200 mg per day on February 9, 2009, two and one-half months prior to the April 20th assaults. He saw his doctor and his prescription was renewed on March 13, 2009. At that time, the medical record described him as suffering from medication-induced tremors, indicating a degree of toxicity.

    I first began writing about the risks of violence associated with antidepressants in the early 1990s in Talking Back to Prozac (coauthored by Ginger Breggin). I specifically addressed Eric Harris’ use of Luvox in my book, Reclaiming Our Children: A Healing Solution for a Nation in Crisis (2000). I also about Eric Harris and Luvox-induced violence in a peer-reviewed scientific article titled “Fluvoxamine as a cause of stimulation, mania and aggression with a critical analysis of the FDA-approved label” (2001).

    With the exception of the disclosure of Eric Harris’ toxicology report, it has been very difficult to obtain exact information about the psychiatric drug exposure of previous mass murders. For example, James Holmes, the Aurora, Colorado shooter was in treatment with psychiatrist Lynne Fenton in the months before he assaulted people in a movie theater. He mailed a box of materials to her shortly before committing the violence. A court hearing recently revealed that four prescription bottles had been removed from his home. Yet to this day information has been withheld about what psychiatric medications he was almost surely taking.

    Similarly, there are unconfirmed reports that Newtown mass murderer Adam Lanza was taking psychiatric drugs. According to the Washington Post, he was, “A really rambunctious kid, as one former neighbor in Newtown, Conn., recalled him, adding that he was on medication.” Yet no information has been released concerning his medication use.

    Psychiatric drugs, including antidepressants, stimulants and tranquilizing sedatives, can cause violence. It is imperative to find out what, if any, psychiatric drugs were being taken by twenty-year old Adam Lanza in the Newtown elementary school massacre.

    GMO food fight: Round two 2013

    (NaturalNews) On November 6, in the wake of one of the most expensive and scurrilous smear campaigns in history, six million voters scared the hell out of Monsanto and Big Food Inc. by coming within a razor’s edge of passing the first statewide mandatory labeling law for genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

    Prop 37, a citizens’ ballot initiative that would have required the mandatory labeling of billions of dollars of genetically engineered (GE) foods and put an end to the routine industry practice of fraudulently marketing GE-tainted foods as “natural” or “all natural,” lost by a narrow margin of 48.6% to 51.4%. Opponents couldn’t claim anything close to a landslide, even though they outspent the pro-labeling campaign almost six to one.

    The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) immediately put a happy face on the narrow victory, repeating its tired old propaganda in a public statement: “Proposition 37 was a deeply flawed measure that would have resulted in higher food costs, frivolous lawsuits and increased state bureaucracies. This is a big win for California consumers, taxpayers, business and farmers.”

    But Jennifer Hatcher, senior vice president of government and public affairs for the Food Marketing Institute, came closer to expressing www.supermarketnews.com the real sentiments of the big guns who opposed Prop 37, a measure she had previously said “scared us to death,” in her official statement:

    “This gives us hope that you can, with a well-funded, well-organized, well-executed campaign, defeat a ballot initiative and go directly to the voters. We hope we don’t have too many of them, because you can’t keep doing that over and over again . . .”.

    Maybe they can’t. But we can. Unlike the Food Marketing Institute and its friends at the GMA, consumers can – and will – “keep doing that over and over again.” We can – and will – propose state laws and state ballot initiatives as often as we need, in as many states as we must, until we have what 61 other countries have: truth and transparency in the form of mandatory GMO labeling laws. Far from giving up, the alternative food and farming movement that was narrowly defeated in California has evolved into a battle-savvy, seasoned national movement,www.alternet.org than ever.

    As Zuri Allen, California Field Organizer of the Organic Consumers Association put it, “We may have lost this first major battle in California, but millions of angry and energized consumers across the country are now joining together in a nationwide right to know campaign which will ultimately drive genetically engineered crops and foods off the market.”

    That clearly has Big Biotech and Big Food worried. And well it should. We’ve barely rung in the new year, and already GMO labeling battles are heating up in Washington State, Vermont and Connecticut. Other states aren’t far behind.

    On Jan. 4, activists in Washington State delivered approximately 300,000 signatures to the state legislature to guarantee that a mandatory GMO labeling Initiative, I-522, will be on the ballot in November. Initial polling shows that Washington state voters will likely pass this Ballot Initiative, no matter how much money the biotech industry and large food corporations put into an anti-labeling campaign.

    On the other side of the country, Vermont is picking up where it left off last year after the governor caved in to Monsanto’s threats to sue www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_25180.cfm the state if it passed a GMO labeling law. Undaunted, and buoyed by 90% support from consumers, legislators will reintroduce a GMO labeling bill in early January. Vermont’s pro-organic, anti-GMO proponents fully expect to pass a labeling bill by May. Connecticut is right behind them, with plans to introduce a similarly popular GMO labeling bill early this year.

    Why a win is just around the corner.

    poured more than $46 million dollars into a vicious dirty tricks campaign to defeat GMO labeling in California. Their tactics included a relentless barrage of TV and radio ads falsely claiming GE food labels would raise grocery prices, hurt family farmers, and enrich trial lawyers. They unleashed “scientific” testimonials manufactured by phony front groups, and they mailed counterfeit voter guides. They may even have engaged in “vote-flipping” by pre-programming electronic voting tabulators.

    A statewide pre-election eve poll conducted by Lake Research found that the Biotech Behemoth’s “No on 37″ propaganda campaign successfully confused many Californians. As of Nov. 5, the day before the election, the majority of Californians stated that they still supported mandatory labeling of GE foods. But a critical mass, especially the 40% who voted early by absentee ballot, said they were willing to give up their right to know what was in their food if mandatory GE labels might increase food costs, expand the size and power of state bureaucrats, harm family farmers or unfairly benefit trial lawyers and other “special interests.”

    That changed once the YES on 37 campaign launched its own modest $3-million ad campaign on October 27. Once the pro-labeling ads rolled out, several million undecided voters saw through the biotech and junk-food industry propaganda and voted Yes on 37. In fact, Prop 37 won the election-day vote. But it was too little, too late. The campaign couldn’t recover from its losses in early voting.

    That was California. Washington State promises to tell a different story.

    Looking at the logistics and outcome of the Prop 37 campaign in California in 2012 and comparing these to the upcoming I-522 battle in Washington, there are several major differences that will likely prove to be decisive:

    (1) Size and campaign costs. California is an enormous state, both geographically and in terms of population. Its TV and radio ad markets are also among the priciest in the country. Tough for a grassroots campaign with a small budget to reach California voters far and wide, on the ground and through the media. Even tougher to compete with an opposition willing and able to spend $46 million to win. Compare that scenario with Washington State, which has one-fifth the population of California, and where $1 spent on TV ads equals $8 in California. Factor in that Washington’s population is highly concentrated in the health and environmentally-conscious Seattle metropolitan area, and it’s easy to see that internet, in-person contact, and radio and TV advertising will cost less and be easier to execute in Washington than it was in California. Experts estimate that Monsanto and its allies will be able to spend only $20 million in Washington on advertising. That’s enough to saturate the state’s airwaves. But it’s not too much for the Yes on I-522 campaign to overcome as long as it can raise and spend $4-$5 million – about half of what the California labeling campaign raised.

    (2) Timing. In California, Yes on 37 forces didn’t get on the ballot until May. That left only six months for public education and fundraising. In Washington, I-522 proponents have a full nine months before people begin their voting (which is by mail).

    (3) Support from farmers and rural communities. In California, Prop 37 was supported mostly by consumers and organic farmers. In Washington State, wheat farmers, whether organic or not, apple farmers and fishing communities also vocally support mandatory GMO labeling. That’s because GMO labeling is arguably in the best economic interests of a state where unlabeled GMO wheat, apples and salmon spilling into the market would severely damage state agricultural exports to countries that either forbid GMO imports or require GMO labeling.

    (4) Progressive elected officials and electorate. California’s Governor Brown refused to take a stand on Prop 37. But Washington’s new elected Governor, Jay Inslee, is a long-time supporter and former Congressional advocate of GMO labeling. Washington voters recently reminded us that they are proud progressives, by approving the legalization of marijuana via a November ballot Initiative. California voters defeated a similar measure in 2010.

    (5) The Frankenfish controversy. Despite enormous public opposition and warnings by scientists that genetically engineered salmon pose unacceptable health and environmental risks, the Obama administration’s FDA announced in late December that it would nonetheless allow unlabeled genetically engineered salmon to be commercialized. Polls show that Washington voters are adamantly opposed to this fast-growing, likely allergenic mutant salmon – part fish, part eel – entering the market. Fishermen/fisherwomen, chefs and restaurants are already raising their voices in opposition. Meanwhile in Alaska, GMO salmon will have to be labeled because of a state law passed in 2005. The biotech industry is going to have a difficult time explaining why Frankenfish have to be labeled in Alaska, but not in Washington or other states.

    (6) Divisions between Big Food and Big Biotech. As the comments by the Food Marketing Institute executive suggest, big food companies are starting to worry about their image. They’re worried about having to fight costly, high-profile battles against GMO labeling in numerous states, possibly even simultaneously. A number of large food companies that dumped big money into defeating Prop 37 – companies like Kellogg’s, General Mills, Unilever, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Kraft and Dean Foods, own “natural” or organic brands. Those brands, including Kashi, Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Ben and Jerry’s, White Wave, Horizon and others, are starting to feel the heat from angry consumers who have joined the “Traitor Boycott.” How long will the nation’s food manufacturers and supermarket chains carry the water and do the dirty work for Monsanto and biotech industry-

    It’s only a matter of time before we pass GMO legislation. Once we do, it will mark the beginning of the end for GMO food and farming, just as it did in Europe.     Patient prescription drug records can be utilized to disclaim Americans their constitutional rights

    (NaturalNews) All Americans who have been prescribed psychiatric medications could be denied their constitutional rights under gun control legislation expected to be introduced into the U.S. Senate on January 22nd. Although the actual text of the bill is not yet available to the public, the heavy emphasis on “mental health” in recent gun control discussions echoes the present-day denial of Second Amendment rights to veterans diagnosed with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).

    In an effort to deny gun ownership “privileges” to as many Americans as possible, Sen. Feinstein and other proponents of total citizen disarmament could simply expand the definition of those deemed “mentally unfit” for gun purchases to include anyone who has ever been prescribed an antidepressant or a drug for ADHD.

    I give credit for this realization to Jon Rappoport, editor of No More Fake News. In a phone conversation yesterday evening, he brought this to my attention, even describing psychiatrists as “the new cops” who get to determine whether you have any rights at all.

    Conducting further research on the subject, I found that a national database of prescription drug users already exists. It was created by the National All Schedules Prescription Electronic Reporting Act (NASPER) signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2005.

    The intent of the NASPRE law was to stop patients from “doc hopping” from one city or state to another in a scam to acquire prescription “controlled substances” such as powerful painkillers. But the effort to monitor controlled substances has morphed into something far more insidious: a multi-state, data-sharing prescription drug surveillance program now run by 48 states.

    The website for that program is www.pmpalliance.org which lists its board members as heads of the very same pharmacies that sell controlled substances for profit. And guess where PMPalliance.org gets its funding- The U.S. Dept. of Justice.

    This means Obama can simply issue an executive orderrequiring the DOJ start using the patient prescription surveillance data for a whole new reason: To add people to a “NO GUN BUY list” in much the same way people are mysteriously added to the TSA’s “no-fly lists” today. (Once you’re on the no-fly list, there’s no way to remove yourself from it, no way to challenge being on the list, no due process and absolutely no ability to sue the government to try to get off the list.)

    The upshot of all this is that if you ever have purchased prescribed antidepressants or other psychiatric drugs, that record already exists in a government database that could soon be used against you as a weapon to deny you your constitutional rights.

    All the government has to do is copy the entire database of psychiatric medication patients it already possesses, then paste that list into the FBI’s instant gun-purchase background check system known as NICS.

    Once flagged in the NICS database, you will never be able to legally purchase a firearm again in America.

    Importantly, this action does not require any new laws to be passed by Congress. Obama can simply invoke this with an executive order, then demand the FBI and ATF begin to immediately enforce this new regulation, even if it is utterly unconstitutional.

    The possibility of this “mental health crackdown” on Second Amendment rights is yet another reason to avoid ever purchasing or using such medications. Not only are SSRI drugs linked to violence and suicides; simply purchasing a bottle of such medications causes your name to be recorded in a government database as having done so. This can immediately flag you as “guilty” even if you’ve never done anything wrong.

    Your prescription drug history can obviously be used against you, completely outside any court of law or due process. In the same way, counseling records of your sessions with psychologists may also be used against you. Although such records are supposed to be protected by law, those laws can simply be overridden by a single signature from President Obama, invoking a “national emergency for the children” or similarly manipulative language. As long as it’s “for the children,” you see, gutting the entire Bill of Rights is morally justifiable, isn’t it-

    It’s not even necessary that you take the drugs yourself in order to be added to the “no gun buy list.” Merely having your children on such drugs could be sufficient to have your name added to the list.

    Why- Because, as you may recall, the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut involved a young man undergoing psychiatric treatment who stole firearms from his mother and used them to carry out the crime. Thus, government lawyers or bureaucrats can simply argue that no household in which a psychiatric drug patient resides can be allowed to purchase or possess any firearms of any kind.

    Don’t think this is possible- Ten years ago, nobody would have thought the TSA would be sexually molesting elderly woman at the airports. Nobody thought the U.S. President would sign a law “legalizing” secret arrests and detainment of U.S. citizens. Nobody thought the government would take over health care and thereby build a federal database of patient records. Nobody ever thought the government would launch a network of domestic surveillance drones to spy on us from the skies. And on top of all that, Obama promised he would never come after your guns.

    The road to tyranny is paved with “nobody ever thought” realizations. This is why it’s so important to keep government small and out of our private lives. When the government doesn’t run healthcare, it doesn’t have access to patient prescription records. When the government doesn’t control what food you can buy and sell, we don’t end up with armed raids on raw milk distributors. When the government doesn’t run the education system, we don’t end up with insanely stupid ideas like announcing all our children are completely unprotected by posting “Gun Free Zone” signs outside public schools.     Get the government out of our lives and we’ll have no wars, no terrorism, no overpriced health care and no school shootings. The government is the PROBLEM. The solution is to drastically cut the size and scope of government.

    How television takes your guns

    (NaturalNews) Somebody has to write about these things. Since I’ve worked as a reporter for 30 years, I know enough about how the game is rigged.

    I’m talking about the big mass tragedies. Sandy Hook, the Aurora theater, Hurricane Sandy, Katrina.

    Many of the interviews with survivors are done on the spot, with no prep. But the biggest interviews are done in a television studio or a home, by a recognized anchor. The setting is arranged beforehand and lit well. A mood and a framework are established.

    The guests are prepped by one of the producers before they go on-air. This is where the brainwashing occurs. A potential conflict needs to be resolved. The network has its agenda and the guest has his.

    The guest is swimming in a welter of emotions, in the wake of the tragedy. A family member has died. The environment of the storm or the murders is still chaotic.

    The network wants to “edit” these feelings, to convey something specific.”

    The producer says to the guest, “What we want to do here is let our audience know how special your daughter was. How wonderful a person she was. We realize, of course, that you’re grieving. We understand and honor that. We do. In this interview, we really want to give you a chance, though, to tell the world what a special girl she was. Talk about her life, her interests, her hobbies, how she was thought of by the family and by friends at school. Honor her memory…”

    Now, this may be the last thing on the guest’s mind. This grieving mother may be feeling angry, outraged. She is feeling absolutely desolate. She is feeling lost. Given the opportunity, she would express these feelings.

    But this is not what the network or the anchor wants. The “program” at the moment involves “reflection on the happy moments of the child’s life.” It’s part of the pre-set storyline.

    At this moment, for this grieving mother, the happy moments are the farthest thing from her mind. But who cares- She just fodder for the network’s agenda.

    And if the producer is skillful enough, he can gently convince the mother that she should devote four minutes of commercially sponsored national television to “a celebration” of her dead child’s life.

    Suddenly, it makes sense to the profoundly confused, profoundly searching mother. Yes. Why not- Why not go along with the program- She’ll have a video clip about her wonderful daughter forever. A scrapbook memory.

    Under no circumstances, of course, will the producer or the anchor permit the mother to go on camera and show outrage and anger. That’s verboten. That cuts too close to the bone. That doesn’t fit the mandatory sequence of horror, shock, loss, grief, healing, resolution, celebration of a life lost.

    The whole sequence is artificial. It’s imposed. It’s orchestrated. It’s a stage play, produced in great part through interviews with guests who have suffered loss and who are “real.”

    Except they’re not. They’re programmed to deliver what the networks want.

    And behind all this- Behind the mandatory spooled-out story line, which takes days to reveal in full, on television- The concealed anomalies and lies and contradictions in the commission of the crime and the ensuing cover-up.

    The network story line hides as much of that as possible.

    This is why the interview-prep is so important. Here is where the guests, before they go on camera, are nudged into the right slot, are shown what to focus on, are brainwashed into doing something they would never do.

    Programming guests is a skill. Networks need people who can do that well. They have them. They pay them.

    Anchor: I understand your daughter liked to make airplane models. Did you think that was unusual-

    Mother: Well, at first we did. But she was good at it, and she enjoyed it so much, we became very enthusiastic about it. My husband introduced her to a buddy of his from the Air Force, and Cindy went up in a jet.

    Anchor (smiling broadly): Really- A jet-

    Mother: When she came home, she was overjoyed.

    Anchor: Did she want to become a pilot-

    Mother (laughing): For a few days. But her love of making models led her to want to be an artist. Our son is a graphics person. He taught Cindy to make computer pictures of our whole extended family. (laughing) We have lots of cousins and aunts and uncles. Cindy put their pictures all over the house. She knew everybody’s names when she was four…

    Completely wacko. But that’s what the television audience sees and digests and accepts. And the anchor moves it right along. A fabricated story. Intercut, of course, with Cindy’s pictures and Cindy smiling and playing and drawing and sitting at the computer.

    And when the dust settles and the mother is being chauffeured home from the interview, her mind wanders and she begins to think about the revenge she wants to visit on the killer of her daughter. As many good mothers would. But it’s too late. She’s already had her four minutes on television. She feels like a fool, but it’s too late.

    She’ll never get to say to Diane Sawyer, “You know, Diane, I wish somehow I was there at the school, and I had a gun, and I shot that killer dead.”

    No, that will never happen.

    And mothers across America, who are feeling that they, too, would have wanted to be there, in the school, if their child was in mortal danger, and would have wanted to have a gun and shoot the killer dead to protect their child at all costs…those mothers will be, to a significant degree, reprogrammed by the Diane Sawyer interview, and they too will begin thinking of the happier times and the old days and the smiles and the laughter.

    This is how a handful of television interviews with skillfully prepped guests can make all the difference in the world. Especially, in the case of Sandy Hook, when gun ownership is now at stake. Do I have to draw a picture for you-

    Because, admit it, if you were the father or mother of a child who was murdered, wouldn’t you have at least a few serious thoughts about revenge- Wouldn’t you- Wouldn’t you think about the .45 you have in the closet upstairs-

    Television, though, teaches you what to feel.

    If after watching a number of these tragedies play out on television, you are completely reprogrammed into some grotesque version of “love everybody all the time and forgive everything,” and you need an outlet, a way to vicariously and subconsciously experience what you REALLY feel, you can always:

    Go to the movies. The movies give you a different slant. You can be Mel Gibson killing people to get his kidnapped daughter back. You can be Charles Bronson wiping out street scum to avenge the loss of his wife. You can be Stallone or Arnie. You can roam the countryside spilling blood at every street corner.

    The movies give you vicarious license to destroy evil. Television news takes it away.

    It’s called the whipsaw effect, and it’s modern mind control, and it puts you in the “excluded middle,” where nothing happens and you remain locked up and passive.

    Where the powers-that-be want you to remain.

    (NaturalNews) In a move supporters say equates with the expression, “Turnabout is fair play,” a local New York publication has decided to publish the names, addresses and work-related information of all employees of The Journal News, the paper that recently decided to invade the privacy of lawful handgun permit holders by publishing their names and addresses.

    “The map indicates the addresses of all Journal News Employees in the New York Tri-State area. Each dot represents an individual Journal News employee — a reporter, editor or staffer,” writes Robert Cox, of the site, Talk of the Sound. “The data does not include freelancers – reporters or photographers – which can be hired without being an employee. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location is a responsible reporter or editor, just that they are a reporter or editor.”

    To create the map, Cox said the website “submitted Google searchers for the names and addresses of all Journal News employees in the New York Tri-State area.” Under state law, he added, “the information is public record.”

    New effort to protect privacy

    Fallout from the publication of those records – which, according to published reports may currently be subject to open records laws – is continuing unabated, as millions of Americans display their outrage over what ordinarily would be a blatant violation of the privacy rights of these lawful permit holders.

    New York State Sen. Greg Ball said he will introduce legislation soon that would ban disclosure of information contained in handgun license applications except to law enforcement officials involved in an active criminal investigation.

    “The asinine editors at The Journal News have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law-abiding firearm owners throughout the region. The immediate elimination of the information posted on the Journal News website is the only way we can ensure the safety and liberty of these New Yorkers,” Ball said in a statement.

    “This is clearly a violation of privacy, and needs to be corrected immediately. The same elitist eggheads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law-abiding citizens like level three sexual predators,” he continued.

    The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs. Publishing this information on a website provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes,” said Ball. “Preventing the theft of guns and their criminal misuse is an important public-policy goal. This map is bad for the good guys and good for the bad guys.”

    What is shame is that, given the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth Amendment privacy protections, a state lawmaker has to actually introduce new legislation that would specifically protect what should already be protected, since the Constitution trumps state law.

    Anti-gun agenda leads local Big apple newspaper into violating Fourth Amendment rights of gun owners

    (NaturalNews) The United States has become an over-lawyered, litigious society, to be sure, but sometimes violations of the Constitution and the law are so punitive and blatant that you can’t wait for the suit to be filed.

    That appears to be the “case,” if you’ll pardon the pun, over the outrageous publication of the names of handgun-permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties in New York State by local newspaper, whose anti-Second Amendment editors also included an interactive map showing what kind of guns the permit holders bought and where they and their families live.

    Understandably the paper, The Journal News, which obtained permit-holder information through a Freedom of Information Act request, immediately began figuratively drawing fire from readers and other citizens concerned about the blatant violation of a permit holder’s Fourth Amendment right to privacy (at press time it is unclear if state law allows publication of the names of permit holders, but it is unimaginable the law would allow publication of the addresses of those holders). So much for the right to be “secure” in your “papers and effects.”

    Criminalizing the law-abiding while endangering the innocent

    The map and accompanying short story were published under the headline: “The Gun-Owner Next Door: What you don’t know about the weapons in your neighborhood.” In trying to justify this horrendously stupid decision, the paper’s editors explained that their decision to publish the information stemmed from the recent massacre of 20 Kindergarten children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in nearby Newtown, Conn., in mid-December, and – supposedly – the concern expressed by some area residents about which of their neighbors might have guns (as if it is any of their business).

    Readers let their wrath be known (hopefully they and a number of the paper’s advertisers will next voice their opinion with their wallets and punish the paper financially). Many pointed out the obvious – that the paper’s editors, regardless of FOIA laws, most likely violated the constitutional protections of these gun-owning permit holders who a) abided by the law and legally obtained their permits; b) never gave anyone permission to publish their addresses in a local newspaper; and c) never thought that they would be treated like criminals for a psychopathic act they had nothing to do with and would never condone in a million years.

    They also pointed out that revealing their addresses, as well as the types of firearms they registered when applying for and receiving their permits, made them a target for gun thieves and practically every other resident who does not have a handgun permit a potential target for burglars and other criminals.

    “Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves-” one reader wrote on Facebook.

    “You have just destroyed the privacy of these law abiding citizens and by releasing this list, you have equated them to that of sex offenders and murderers,” another wrote. “These are law abiding gun owners, they are no danger to anyone except for criminals. And with this information you have made them targets for both criminals and anti-gun lobbyist who i am sure are going to treat them like monsters.”

    Gee – what else would “readers” like to know-

    The idiots at the paper defended the indefensible.

    “The massacre in Newtown remains top-of-mind for many of our readers,” said a statement. “In the past week, conversation on our opinion pages and on our website, LoHud.com, has been keenly focused on gun control.

    “Our readers are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods. We obtained the names and addresses of Westchester and Rockland residents who are licensed to own handguns through routine Freedom of Information law public-records requests.”

    First of all, there is no way of knowing just how many readers really wanted to know about guns in local neighborhoods; this sounds more like the editors of the paper not only wanted to know, but wanted to “out” these law-abiding gun owners as somehow culpable to the Newtown tragedy.

    Secondly, just because some readers may say they want to know certain things about their neighbors doesn’t give them – or the press – the right to know. Private property is just that – private – and unless someone is using something they own to hurt another or deprive them of their life, liberty or property, there is no public right to know, and no paper’s obligation to reveal such information.

    What’s next – revealing how much cash people keep in their homes- How many have a back-up generators and long-term storable rations, because some readers have been asking– Who has ammunition in their home- Extra clothing and batteries-

    There should be some ACLU lawyers lining up to take this case. Let’s hope at least some of the needlessly exposed want to pursue a legal recourse.
